Design is about realising practical and attractive solutions to today’s challenges, but it can also be about visualising a far-future idea of how life might be. This design does just that.
Following the design brief’s call to design a new type of Polestar that stretches the boundaries of imagination, student category finalist Vivek Marathe has designed a two-seat autonomous hydrofoil watercraft; pure in the way that it does not derive from existing vehicle designs, and very simple in its core form.
The design has more in common with science fiction spacecraft forms than existing vehicle design. And though it may side-step some of today’s technical parameters, it does envision a compelling travel experience for two people that could have real application in the near future.
What does “pure” mean to you, and for your Polestar design?
“Pure” is not just the appearance of the vehicle, but the purity in the lifecycle of the vehicle that’s reflected in its design. I’m looking at the big picture when thinking about pure mobility solutions; I see water as infrastructure, and electrical energy being generated from water currents. This is a way for Polestar to not just create sustainable mobility, but set up a new trend of holistic, sustainable lifestyle visions.
How would you describe the essence of your design to someone who hasn’t seen it before?
For centuries, not much has changed in terms of watercraft shapes and forms. With the progress in materials and technology, I took the opportunity to come up with a totally fresh watercraft proposal, where Polestar is a guiding star in sustainable water transportation. Bodies of water are naturally available and connected to many major locations. Can we create sophisticated sustainable mobility without the need for extra infrastructure?
What is it about your design that you are most proud of, or that is most unique?
I believe future customers won’t just be buying vehicles, but also the lifestyle visions that come along those vehicles. The Polestar EON is a completely fresh proposal for sustainable water mobility in terms of design, form and architecture, which successfully demonstrates how Polestar could be a guiding star, not just in the automotive domain, but also in other sectors.
