Madhav Dua

Polestar CUBE

The twentieth century will be remembered for the mass adoption of the car, the invention of aircraft, and their impacts on society. Perhaps the 21st century will be remembered for way vehicles became autonomous. This design from student finalist Madhav Dua shows one direction autonomous travel may take: a Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) Unmanned Air Vehicle (UAV) similar in concept to today’s drones, but larger and capable of carrying four passengers.

The design integrates several Polestar signatures and is pure both in its purpose, and in having unadulterated surfaces with no adornment.

What does “pure” mean to you, and for your Polestar design?

I use the term “pure” to describe any object that is unadulterated, truthful and has a clear purpose. In my design, it refers to the combination of clean surfaces, purposeful details and lack of distraction from its actual intent. These factors have contributed to the minimalistic aesthetic that the CUBE possesses, along with a unified form.

How would you describe the essence of your design to someone who hasn’t seen it before?

The CUBE is an all-electric four-seater autonomous air vehicle powered by VTOL (Vertical Take Off and Landing) technology. The intent is to contribute to Polestar’s sustainability ambitions by reducing the footprint of ground transportation and enabling a larger number of people to be connected to urban areas. It will do so by linking urban centers with suburbs while avoiding traffic, facilitating a network of socio-economic zones within any given region.

What is it about your design that you are most proud of, or that is most unique?

The autonomous urban aircraft market may be worth $1.5 trillion by 2040, according to a Morgan Stanley Research study. The CUBE could play a key role in this market by utilizing the infrastructure provided by Polestar spaces and Google’s technology. It would contribute to a shared mobility model both within and between cities. The CUBE has a sense of empowerment, through clean, striking, honest design, often exposing what is beneath the surface. I pride myself on the CUBE’s iconic silhouette and proportions, while having achieved an aesthetic that embodies the saying: “less is more”.
