Precept: 3D knit

Premium with a purpose. That’s how we view the 3D knit material covering the seats of the Precept. Not only does it have a distinctive look and feel befitting a premium vehicle, it’s made from a single strand of yarn. Variations of this material have been seen before, but only in the fashion world. We’ve brought it into automotive. And not just for the look.

It reduces waste in two ways: it’s made to size and therefore has no offcuts, and it repurposes discarded plastic bottles into something new. Plastic has near-infinite applications. We’ve found a new one, one that puts old plastic to new use.

Sometimes, speeding things up requires slowing down. As we’ve said before, the change to greater sustainability needs to happen more quickly. This can be achieved, paradoxically, by taking a slower approach. Designing timeless products to have a longer life cycle will reduce consumption and prolong a product’s usability, whether in automotive or in fashion. Something Alexander Stutterheim understands better than most.

Predicting the near future: Polestar and Balenciaga

The near future has been a muse for countless designers. It provides a framework in which creativity can thrive alongside an inbuilt sense of realism. The Polestar Design Contest and Polestar Precept were some of our near-future explorations. “Afterworld: The Age of Tomorrow” is one of Balenciaga’s. And they’ve asked Polestar to be a part of it.

Research Project: Sharging

Creating a more sustainable future is a journey, one that doesn’t end now that we have put electric performance cars on the road. It is bigger and involves more than just us. In fact, the more the merrier.
