Due to aggressive growth plans Polestar is currently looking to recruit a materials development engineer as part of the Exterior Materials Delivery Team.

The person:

  • You have developed new materials for the Automotive (or similar industries) Industry before and understand the high demands in Vehicle Engineering.
  • You have experience in working with sustainability teams and have a working understanding of Life Cycle Analyses
  • You have a proven ability to work to deadlines and prioritise your own workload

The Role:

Working in the Exterior team, your responsibilities will be to deliver new colours and paint systems across all polestar vehicles, ensuring we are staying at the forefront of the technologies available. You will also work closely with our Advanced Engineering team, having a direct input into future innovations and exciting new materials. You will collaborate not only with the up-front team, but also with our design department and engineering colleagues to develop and introduce these materials into production vehicles. With this cross-collaboration, you will play a central part in developing our sustainable material portfolio and influence Polestar’s position as the market leader in modern material selection that benefits the world we live.

The role will entail the following responsibilities:

  • Managing the introduction of new colours on exterior materials, working with suppliers to do so, meeting programme gateways on time
  • Develop and manage technical specifications and test plans used to validate new materials
  • Support the program Engineering teams with issues found in testing and the field related to material selection.
  • Working directly with Advanced engineering to deliver the most innovative and sustainable materials into Polestar Vehicles
  • Working across the exterior’s community leading the development and implementation of paint developments and other new materials
  • Report out to management on the progress of each of the live projects on a regular basis.
  • Support with material quality assessments across exteriors
  • Support approvals for grain mapping and grain go
  • Support with colour sign off / colour harmony assessments
  • Manage cross functional alignment of colour/material selection
  • Collaborating with supplier partners and research institutes to identify and develop new material advancements in reach of the Polestar goal of climate neutrality.
  • Create and manage cosmetic standards for exterior components

Minimum Required Skills & Experience:

  • 3+ years working in Automotive Industry or similar field
  • Direct validation and development experience of automotive grade materials
  • A materials science/Engineering degree
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal & organisational skills, with good attention to detail
  • Able to work in start-up environment

Desirable Experience:

  • Experience in the field of materials research at an institute or material supplier
  • Experience of developing and validating exterior paint systems
  • Experience working with paints, metals, plastics and developing from early stages to production level
  • Experience with colour developments of different hard component finishes e.g plastics, chromes etc.
  • Experience developing materials at an Automotive manufacturer
  • Direct LCA analysis experience
  • Familiarity with colour and wave-scan measurement techniques (for example X-Rite, Byk-MAC)
