Research Lead - Minerals & Mining

Advanced Engineering is responsible for the pursuit of the company’s goals in sustainability, performance and technology advancements. We have a rare and exciting role for someone with knowledge of minerals and mining to support our body structures function.
What you’ll do
- Working with the wider Advanced Engineering community looking at current and new mineral extraction processes and development opportunities to improve our performance, sustainability, and circularity attributes.
- Ensuring relevant research is carried out with a clear end goal in place.
- Collaborating with supplier partners and research institutes to identify opportunities & create plans to develop new advancements in mineral extraction to explore climate neutrality by 2030.
- Work with the Polestar engineering teams to propose and validate, new mineral extraction theories.
- Role to be situated within Polestar Body structures in Advanced Engineering and will have a bias towards metallurgical elements but will have an involvement in other business units.
- Undertake studies of existing mineral extraction processes used by our suppliers for Polestar vehicles. Create and roll out plans to reduce the carbon footprint of our existing vehicles.
- Provide education on Mineral extraction to the wider Engineering team ensuring we are constantly educating and up-skilling the engineering teams.
- Willingness to take “project lead” role for new projects and processes in Advanced Engineering projects.
- Report out to management on the progress of each of the live projects on a regular basis
- Willingness to develop knowledge in other Automotive Engineering fields to broaden expertise.
- Support LCA exercises to understand mineral extraction circularity
- Support Environmental and legislative regulations around mineral extraction
Who you are

- An understanding and passion for current and future Mineral extraction and Sustainability.
- You are an expert in Minerals and Mineral extraction with a deep understanding of their process chemistry and traceability.
- You understand the material manufacturing process and have a passion for improving the sustainability of production.
- An understanding of the challenges associated with the automotive and industrial sectors.
- Self-motivated with excellent collaboration skills
- You have a proven ability to work to deadlines and prioritise your own workload.
- You can work proactively with minimal support using a logical approach in an environment with minimal documented processes.
- You have a proven ability to adapt to dynamic work streams and adapt to developing project targets
- An understanding of Environmental and legislative regulations around mineral extraction
Minimum Required Skills & Experience:
- 2+ years working in Mining/mineral Industry or similar field
- Materials science/Chemical Engineering /Mining Engineering/Geology degree or Equivalent
- Experience with Microsoft Office applications
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal & organisational skills, with good attention to detail
- Able to work in start-up environment.
Desirable Experience:
- 1+ years working in Automotive Industry or similar field
- Experience in the field of mineral research at an institute or material extractor
- Experience developing material extraction processes
- Experienced in sustainability driven projects form investigation to solution
- Analytical and innovation skills to manage new technology
