The increased global average temperature and extreme weather events raise the need for immediate actions to combat climate change. Polestar is committed to driving change towards a climate-neutral future with sustainable electric mobility. However, the speed and convenience of charging at a public station remain as challenges that warrant further investigation.

The battery is a complex core component in a modern EV, especially when high performance is combined with a strive to reduce carbon footprint to zero. Moreover, battery technology is evolving fast, and hence tools and methods need continuous improvements to enable full utilization at each development step. Advanced simulation models, both physics-based as well as empirical or data-driven models are needed to optimize battery pack design, dimensioning and control.

This project aims to develop and/or customize battery models as well as experimental methods, targeting new Li-ion chemistries and with the focus to optimize the effort needed for parameterization. The model type ranges from simple empirical equivalent circuits to physics-based electrochemical models, with reduced-order models and advanced pseudo-1D models being considered being of special interest. Experimental work on various Li-ion cells is just as essential as programming and analysis in this very open-ended master thesis project.


What you’ll do

  • Develop battery cell models with various levels of complexity based on first-principles as well as empirical methods
  • Combine electrochemical theory with electrothermal models
  • Evaluate, enhance and customize experimental methods to parameterize cell models


Who you are

  • M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Chemistry, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science
  • Good knowledge in Python and MATLAB/Simulink, basic skills within CAE-tools like COMSOL or Ansys
  • Interest and skills in experimental work and measurement techniques
  • Completed courses with good knowledge in electrical circuit theory and programming. A background in electrochemistry/battery technology and experience with advanced modeling tools is an advantage.
