Research Lead - Body Structure Materials

Due to aggressive growth plans Polestar is currently looking to recruit a Research Lead in the structures function.

The Person will:

  • Challenge of ‘the norm’ and not accepting of what has been done before
  • Be forward thinking and constantly up to date with automotive and adjacent industry material trends and application.
  • Have an understanding and passion for current and future automotive body structure & exterior materials.
  • Have progressed new materials for the Automotive (or similar industries) Industry before and understand the high demands in Vehicle Engineering.
  • Be an expert in Steel and Aluminium with deep understanding of their chemistry and use.
  • Understand how to develop and improve material attributes and properties.
  • Understand the material manufacturing process and have a passion for improving the sustainability of production.
  • Understand the challenges associated with material joining in the real world of vehicle structural engineering.
  • Be self-motivated with excellent collaboration skills
  • Have a proven ability to work to deadlines and prioritise your own workload.
  • Be able to work proactively with minimal support using a logical approach in an environment with minimal documented processes.


The Role:

  • Working with the wider Advanced Engineering community looking at new material, process and development opportunities to improve our performance, sustainability and circularity attributes.
  • Ensuring relevant research is carried out with a clear end goal in place.
  • Collaborating with supplier partners and research institutes to identify opportunities & create plans to develop new advancements in materials to reach the Polestar goal of climate neutrality by 2030.
  • Work with the body structure engineering teams to produce material usage and structural joining plans to validate new material usage theories.
  • Undertake studies of existing materials within Polestar vehicles and create and roll out plans to reduce the carbon footprint of our existing vehicles.
  • Support the program Engineering teams with issues found in testing and the field related to material selection.
  • Provide education on materials Engineering to the wider Engineering team ensuring we are constantly educating and up-skilling the engineering teams.
  • Willingness to take “project lead” role for new materials and processes in Advanced Engineering projects.
  • Report out to management on the progress of each of the live projects on a regular basis


Minimum Required Skills & Experience:

  • Experience working in Automotive Industry or similar field
  • Direct validation and development experience of automotive or higher-grade materials
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal & organisational skills, with good attention to detail
  • Able to work in start-up environment


Desirable Experience:

  • A materials science/Engineering degree
  • Experience in the field of materials research at an institute or material supplier
  • Experience developing materials at an Automotive manufacturer
  • Direct LCA analysis experience
  • CAD package exposure
